Why Choose To Do An Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Cecile Ingram

Many people shy away from doing any arts and crafts as they feel that they are not artistic. There is an area where everyone can join in no matter how artistic they are. This is the field of abstract watercolor painting, and it is so simple to do, and at the end of the day you end up with your own unique piece of artwork. You don't even need to spend a fortune on materials, and they can all be obtained at your local arts and crafts store.

An easy one to try requires just a few items and a little time. You will need some watercolor paper, a board to fix it to, and some tape to fix the paper to the board. Also a brush, a paint set and some rubber cement. To avoid damaging the paper when you remove the tape, place the length of tape initially on your trouser leg. Quickly remove it, this will pick up very tiny fibers. This prevents the tape being overly sticky, making it easier to remove but it will still hold the paper firmly in place.

As it is your first attempt it is best to limit yourself to two different colors. Choose colors which appear next to each other on a color-wheel. You can see these online so don't worry if you don't have one. You might choose yellow and green or green and blue. The colors which you choose can be used to match an existing color scheme.

Apply the rubber cement solution to your paper in a random pattern. Allow time for it to dry, although if you are eager to carry on a hair dryer can be used. Once the cement has dried you get to the fun part, you get to start painting. It doesn't matter where you put the paint as it is your design. You will notice the different effects that it has on the paper the wetter the paint is.

Don't get too carried away with the first painting. The next stage is to let it once again dry, again the hair dryer can be used to help speed things up. Once the paint is dry the process with the rubber cement solution can be repeated, and when that is also dry the next layer of painting can take place. This may be repeated as many times as you like.

Once you are satisfied with the effect you can remove that rubber cement solution. This is a simple matter of gently rubbing it away with your finger tips. As the rubber cement comes away you get to see a pattern coming through. You can either trace along the edges of these patterns or leave it as appears.

The tape can now also be removed at this point. You will notice how easily it can be removed without ripping the paper, if you followed the earlier tip. Also you will now have nice clear border areas.

Just by following those simple steps you will have created an abstract watercolor painting. Such a simple process might give you the urge to try and create some more art. Everyone has a budding artist inside of them.
