Positive Impacts Of Calligraphy Designs

By Katrina Wheeler

Calligraphy designs refers to designing and executing lettering using a brush or a broad tip instrument in one stroke, unlike build up lettering where the letters are drawn. Calligraphic practice is the art of giving form to signs in a skillful, expensive and harmonious manner. Calligraphic lettering deals with drawing of topographic letter in the outline.

Several other western styles use similar tools and practices, but differ by stylistic preferences and character set. Modern designing techniques range from functional arts to fine-art products which may or may not be legible. A skilled and experienced calligrapher can always practice both non-classical hand lettering and classical calligraphic art, although the two differ greatly.

Calligraphic products are mainly used in religious art, wedding and even invitations, memorial documents, graphic design, announcements, topography, and cut stone inscriptions. It is also used in moving images in television and images, testimonials, maps, death and birth certificates, anniversary cards, and all works that require artistic forms of writing. Charters awarded by state officers and monarchs in various countries in the world also employ use of artistic writing.

Pens and brushes are the most important tools for calligraphers. Dip pens and fountain pens are the most used types of pens. Dip pens that are dipped into the ink remain the original way of writing calligraphic arts and are the most preferred by many calligraphers because they have a broad range of nibs. Fountain pens are less messy; therefore, many beginners find them easier to work with.

Good quality paper, with good consistency of porosity produces cleaner lines, although vellum or parchment is usually used. A light box is required to permit lines pass through the paper while a knife is used to erase the work. Templates and light boxes are used to yield straight lines without detractions on the work that arises from pencil markings. College ruled paper usually act as an excellent guide line.

Western calligraphic practice is recognized by use of Latin scripts. The Latin alphabet was invented in Rome, and by the second century, it developed into Roman imperial capitals that were carved on stones. As writing withdrew to monasteries, a new uncial script was discovered for copying the Bible and many other religious texts. Monasteries helped in preserving calligraphic traditions during the fourth and fifth centuries, when Europe entered the dark ages and the Roman Empire fell.

The size, shape, hair type, and stretch of the ink brush, color, water density and density of the ink, as well as the water absorption rate of the paper and surface texture are main physical parameters that directly or indirectly influence the final result. The calligrapher also determines the final result by the quantity of water and ink he lets the brush take. The pressure he applies on the brush, angle of inclination of the brush, and direction he gives the brush, producing bolder or thinner strokes, and toothed or smooth borders.

Calligraphy designs boosts visual impression of words and graphics. The nostalgic impression set by calligraphic arts can help individuals share in the activity and learn the basic techniques, then develop their own style. Calligraphy and lettering can be used together, especially in designs where calligraphic styles require lettering, and is flowing and expensive.
