Pastels & 3 Points For Stronger Art

By Robert Sutter

If you are looking for softer processes as far as art is concerned, pastels are recommended. They are able to create more relaxing images and the fact that lighter colors are prominent is a fact that cannot be overlooked. Let's say that your interest lies in this particular endeavor, though; what should you keep in mind as far as this is concerned? For those who are looking for help in order to make pastel artistry easier, here are 3 ways to ensure that it is done with the utmost effectiveness.

1. Hold the pastel in your hand as if you would hold a pencil. While the shape of a pastel might be worlds apart from a pencil, the ability to go about this can actually help to make whatever it is that you are trying to create stand out that much more. This will allow you to have a much greater level of control when it comes to your pastel, enabling you to create both thin and thick lines alike. You will soon learn that your whole arm will become involved in pastel art.

2. Understand which pastels are best when they are mixed together. This is where I feel as though painting is an easier endeavor, since you will be able to mix colors rather easily before applying them to the canvas in front of you. Pastels, on the other hand, have to be applied directly on the surface but I am of the opinion that this has the potential to create a litany of moods as a result. For more comprehensive blending, on your part, make sure that you have a tissue or cotton swab on hand.

3. One of the biggest variables to consider, as far as your pastels are concerned, is the surface that they might be applied to. This is especially important when given the fact that pastels usually do not work well with smoother surfaces, which means that you have to look for rougher textures. These, on the other hand, prove especially effective as far as pastel artistry is concerned. While a seemingly small difference, at first place, it can tremendously alter the landscape of what it is that you are trying to create.

If you are looking for some of the best tips possible, in regards to pastel artistry, these should be able to stand out. It's apparent that this endeavor is fulfilling, to a number of individuals, and I do not think that anyone will be able to argue with such a sentiment. It seems as though every last element is going to matter, whether you are talking about the surface used for pastel application or what have you. Either way, it should be noted that these tips will help in the long term.
